Studio showings are one way to experience concert dance in a more intimate setting. Removing the distance between the performers and audience exploits vulnerability. This ultimately can lead to a genuine connections between the dancers, live musicians and audience that may be unique to the setting and deeply satisfying in its own way.
I was fortunate to catch Visceral Dance open studio preview 10/9/2014. It featured three newly commissioned works, the introduction of new additions to the company, live music and a heartfelt post-performance Q&A session with the artists and choreographers.
Keep up with Visceral Dance Chicago and their upcoming performances here.
